Torsten Rasch

Biography

Torsten Rasch was born in Dresden in 1965, sang in the Dresdner Kreuzchor as a boy and studied composition and piano at the Carl Maria von Weber College of Music in Dresden. In 1990 he moved to Japan, where he established himself as a composer for film and television and wrote more than 40 scores. After returning to Germany he wrote the song cycle “Mein Herz brennt”, based on songs by the band Rammstein, commissioned by the Dresdner Sinfoniker; its recording with René Pape and Katharina Thalbach won an ECHO Klassik award. He also worked with the Pet Shop Boys on their score for the silent film “Battleship Potemkin”. His first opera, “Rotter”, to a libretto by Thomas Brasch, premiered at Oper Köln in 2008, followed in 2010 by “The Duchess of Malfi” with English National Opera and Punchdrunk in London. For the Semperoper Dresden he wrote “Die andere Frau” (premiered 2022, libretto by Helmut Krausser), and for Theater Regensburg the chamber opera “Die wunderbaren Jahre” after Reiner Kunze (2025). In 2019/20 he held a fellowship at the Villa Massimo in Rome.
