Biography
Torquato Tasso was born on 11 March 1544 in Sorrento and died on 25 April 1595 in Rome. After an education with the Jesuits in Naples and studies in law and philosophy in Padua and Bologna, he became court poet in Ferrara in 1565, first under Cardinal Luigi d'Este and later under Duke Alfonso II. It was there that he wrote both the pastoral play "Aminta" and his major work, the crusade epic "Jerusalem Delivered." From 1579 Tasso suffered severe psychological crises that led to his confinement in the Sant'Anna hospital; after his release in 1586 he led an unsettled life moving between various Italian courts. Through his epic and dramatic work he is considered one of the foremost poets of the Italian Renaissance.
