Biography

Tom Witkowski was born on 29 November 1937 in Ohlau, Silesia. In 1958 he founded the Zimmertheater Tübingen, which opened with Look Back in Anger, and went on to work as an actor and director at theatres including the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, the Mannheim National Theatre and Aachen's municipal theatre. In 1996 he founded the Academy for Free Theatre (Akademie ff) in Aachen. As author and director, he created the impromptu-theatre piece Das Narrenfest in 1994, based on the painting of the same name by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, later restaging it as Comedia del Regio (1996) and Die Zugvögel (2013). He received the Golden Badge of Honour of the German Stage Employees' Association for his life's work.
