Biography
Todd Matshikiza was born in Queenstown, South Africa, in 1921 and died in exile in Lusaka, Zambia, in 1968. From 1952 he wrote for Drum magazine, shaping the journalism of the Sophiatown scene with a rhythmic style colleagues called "Matshikese". He became internationally known as the composer of the musical "King Kong" (1959), one of the first multiracially cast South African stage productions during apartheid. He later lived in England and Zambia, where he worked as a broadcaster and music archivist.
