Biography
Tirso de Molina, born Gabriel Téllez, was probably born in Madrid in 1579; the exact year remains disputed among scholars. Around 1600 he entered the Mercedarian order, was ordained a priest in 1606, and later wrote its official chronicle. Alongside Lope de Vega and Calderón de la Barca, he ranks among the foremost playwrights of Spanish Baroque theatre; of his roughly eighty surviving plays, mostly written between 1621 and 1636, Don Gil von den grünen Hosen and El burlador de Sevilla – which introduced the Don Juan figure to world literature – are among the best known. He died in Almazán in 1648.
