Biography
Tim Etchells was born in Stevenage, England, in 1962. In 1984 he co-founded the performance group Forced Entertainment in Sheffield, which he has led as artistic director ever since; its best-known collaboratively devised works include the durational performances “Speak Bitterness” (1994) and “Quizoola!” (1996), and in 2016 the group received the International Ibsen Award. Etchells also works as a visual artist in video, photography, text and installation, including neon and LED text works in public space, and writes fiction such as the stories “Endland Stories” (1999) and the novel “The Broken World” (2008); “Certain Fragments” (1999) collects his writing on contemporary performance. He is Professor of Performance and Writing at Lancaster University. For the Flemish company Victoria he wrote and directed “That Night Follows Day” in 2007, a piece in which children perform for an adult audience and which has since been staged in many countries and languages.
