Biography
Thomas Otway was born on 3 March 1652 in Trotton, Sussex, and attended Christ Church College, Oxford, which he left without a degree. After a brief, unsuccessful stint as an actor he turned to writing and became one of the leading dramatists of his age with tragedies such as "The Orphan" (1680) and, above all, "Venice Preserv'd" (1682). Despite this success he lived in financial hardship throughout his life and died in London on 4 April 1685, aged just 33.
