Biography

Thomas Adès was born on 1 March 1971 in London and studied piano and composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama before reading music at King's College, Cambridge, graduating with a double first in 1992. Works such as the chamber opera "Powder Her Face" (1995) quickly established him as one of the defining voices of his generation of composers. From 1999 to 2008 he was artistic director of the Aldeburgh Festival, co-founded by Benjamin Britten. Alongside further operas such as "The Tempest" (2004) and "The Exterminating Angel" (2016), Adès is active internationally as a pianist and conductor and holds the Britten Professorship of Composition at the Royal Academy of Music.
