Biography

Tarjei Vesaas was born on 20 August 1897 on a farm in Vinje, in the Norwegian province of Telemark, where he grew up. After attending a folk high school in Voss and spending time in Oslo, which sparked his interest in theatre, he travelled extensively across Europe between 1925 and 1933, including stays in Paris, London and Munich. In 1934 he married the poet Halldis Moren and settled with her at the Midtbø farm in Vinje, where he remained until shortly before his death. Vesaas wrote in Nynorsk and, with novels such as "Kimen" (1940, German "Der Keim"), "Fuglane" (1957) and "Is-slottet" (1963), is regarded as one of the most significant Norwegian authors of the twentieth century; he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature several times. He died on 15 March 1970 in Oslo.
