Biography
Tang Xianzu was born in 1550 in Linchuan, in China's Jiangxi province, and passed the highest imperial examination in 1583. He then held official posts in several provinces before retiring from government service in 1598 to devote himself entirely to writing. His best-known work, "The Peony Pavilion", completed in 1598, belongs to a cycle of four Kunqu operas he wrote after retiring to his home town. He died in Linchuan in 1616.
