Biography
Thomas Stearns Eliot was born on 26 September 1888 in St. Louis, Missouri, and studied at Harvard College before moving to England in 1914. With poems such as The Waste Land (1922) he became one of the defining voices of English-language modernism. In 1927 he became a British citizen and joined the Church of England; the verse drama Murder in the Cathedral (1935) dates from this period of religious reorientation. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948. Eliot died in London on 4 January 1965.
