Biography

Stephanie Thiersch was born in Wiesbaden in 1970 and trained in classical and modern dance in Wiesbaden and Montpellier. From 1992 to 1997 she studied Romance philology and media and communication studies in Mannheim; her master’s thesis on video dance won the university’s science prize. She then studied media art at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne, among others with Valie Export. Since 2000 she has directed the Cologne dance company MOUVOIR, with which she has created more than 50 stage works, films and installations, often in close collaboration with musicians such as the Asasello Quartet or the orchestra Les Siècles, for example in “Bronze by Gold” (2015) and “Bilderschlachten” (2019). She directed the festival GLOBALIZE:COLOGNE (2006–2016) and has received awards including the Cologne Dance and Theatre Prize (2005 and 2017) and the Kurt Hackenberg Prize (2019). For “Sunville” (2026) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin she developed the music-theatre work together with Sofia Jernberg and Fiston Mwanza Mujila and is responsible for direction and choreography.
