Biography
Stefano Pavesi was born on 22 January 1779 in Casaletto Vaprio near Crema and died on 28 July 1850 in Crema. After early studies in Crema he went to Naples, where he joined the Parthenopean Republic; after its suppression in 1799 he was arrested and deported to France, allegedly saved from execution only through Domenico Cimarosa's intervention. As an opera composer he is considered a significant, if second-rank, figure of the bel canto era behind Rossini and Donizetti; his greatest success came in 1810 with the opera buffa 'Ser Marcantonio', whose libretto by Angelo Anelli later formed the basis for Donizetti's 'Don Pasquale' (1843). From 1814 he served as maestro di cappella at Crema Cathedral, alone from 1818 until his death.
