Biography

Stefano Landi was born in Rome in 1587 and entered the Collegio Germanico as a boy soprano in 1595; from 1602 he studied at the Seminario Romano. After early appointments as organist and choirmaster, including a post in the service of the Bishop of Padua, he settled permanently in Rome in 1620. There he served as choirmaster at several churches and worked for the Borghese and Barberini families as well as Cardinal Maurizio of Savoy; from 1629 he also sang in the papal choir. His opera "Il Sant'Alessio", premiered in 1632, became one of the most influential works of early Roman opera. Landi died in Rome in 1639.
