Biography
Stef Smith comes from a village near Stirling in Scotland and graduated in Drama and Theatre Arts from Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh in 2009. Her first play, Roadkill, a project with Cora Bissett, ran at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2010 and 2011 and won the 2012 Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre, as well as a Fringe First and a Herald Angel, among other awards. For the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh she wrote Swallow (2015, German title Drosseln), which earned her a second Fringe First, and Girl in the Machine (2017), and for the Royal Court Theatre in London Human Animals (2016). Her reimagining of Ibsen's play as Nora: A Doll's House opened at the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow in 2019, was staged at the Young Vic in London in 2020 and made her a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. In 2024 her stage adaptation of Amy Liptrot's memoir The Outrun followed at the Edinburgh International Festival; for BBC Scotland she wrote the television drama Float.
