Biography

Sophie Calle was born in Paris in 1953 and works as a conceptual and performance artist using photography, text, installation and video. She often turns encounters with strangers or episodes from her own life into material: for The Sleepers (1979) she had 45 people sleep in her bed one after another and photographed them, for Suite vénitienne (1979) she followed a passing acquaintance to Venice in disguise, and for The Hotel (1981) she took a job as a chambermaid in a Venetian hotel and documented the guests' belongings. The Address Book (1983), a portrait of an unknown man pieced together from conversations with the people in his lost address book, appeared as a serial in the newspaper Libération and caused a scandal. In 2007 she represented France at the Venice Biennale with Take Care of Yourself, in which 107 women interpret a break-up email Calle had received. Her honours include the Hasselblad Award in 2010 and the Praemium Imperiale in 2024.
