Biography
Sofia Jernberg was born in Ethiopia in 1983 and grew up in Vietnam and Sweden. From 2002 to 2004 she studied jazz at Fridhem folk high school, and then composition with Per Mårtensson and Henrik Strindberg at the Gotland School of Music Composition. With the pianist Cecilia Persson she co-led the ensemble Paavo; in 2008 she received the jazz award of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. As a soloist she sang in Mats Gustafsson’s Fire! Orchestra, in Schoenberg’s “Pierrot lunaire” (2010) and in Sciarrino’s “Lohengrin” (2014). Her vocal art works with non-verbal sounds, split tones, toneless singing and distortion. As a composer she has written works including “Dreams of our future” (2022, Ultima Festival Oslo); “Sunville” (2026) is her first work for music theatre.
