Biography
Sidney Jones was born in 1861 in Islington, near London, and died in 1946 in Kew. He began his musical career as a clarinettist in his father's orchestra, later became a military bandmaster, and from 1882 worked as a touring conductor for operetta productions. In 1892 theatre producer George Edwardes brought him to London as a conductor, which paved his way to composing. His fruitful partnership with librettist Owen Hall began with 'A Gaiety Girl' in 1893 and culminated in his greatest success, the operetta 'Die Geisha' ('The Geisha'), in 1896, which remained one of the most frequently performed English-language musical theatre works in Europe for decades. Later works such as 'San Toy' never matched that success to the same degree.
