Biography
Sezen Aksu, born Fatma Sezen Yıldırım on 13 July 1954 in Sarayköy in Turkey's Denizli Province, is one of the most influential singers and composers in Turkish pop music. She debuted in the mid-1970s and scored her first number-one hit in 1976 with “Olmaz Olsun / Seni Gidi Vurdumduymaz”. As a songwriter and producer she helped launch the careers of younger artists such as Tarkan, Sertab Erener and Hande Yener, shaping the development of modern Turkish pop music. She has repeatedly received the Altın Kelebek (Golden Butterfly) award for best female pop singer and has collaborated internationally with musicians including Udo Lindenberg and Goran Bregović. Her popularity earned her the nickname “Minik Serçe” (Little Sparrow).
