Biography
Semen Hulak-Artemovsky was born in 1813 near Horodyshche in the Kiev Governorate, the son of a priest. From 1838 he trained as a singer in Saint Petersburg under Mikhail Glinka and went on to perform more than fifty operatic roles there, including Ruslan in Glinka's Ruslan and Lyudmila. In 1863 he composed Zaporozhets za Dunayem, the first complete Ukrainian opera, writing both music and libretto himself and singing the lead role at its premiere. He was a close friend of the Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko. Hulak-Artemovsky died in Moscow in 1873.
