Biography
Sebastian Schwab, born in 1993, studied composition, conducting, music theory and violin, among other places in Munich, and was a scholarship holder of the Dirigentenforum (conductors' forum). As a conductor he assisted the general music director of the Staatsoper Stuttgart and served as first Kapellmeister at the Bern Opera; guest engagements took him to the Zurich Opera House, the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe and the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, among others. With the librettist Kai Weßler he wrote the kitchen opera Wurst (2020, Heidenheim Opera Festival) and the children's opera Holle! (2021, Staatsoper Stuttgart). These were followed by Odysseus' Heimkehr after Monteverdi at Theater Bielefeld (2021), Der Räuber Hotzenplotz at the Staatsoper Stuttgart and Musketiere! at the Salzburg Festival in 2025. He received the Leonhard and Ida Wolf Memorial Prize for the song cycle Echowand, created together with Mikis Theodorakis; his youth opera Skaterherz is due to premiere at Oper Frankfurt in February 2027.
