Biography
Sam Shepard was born in 1943 in Fort Sheridan, Illinois, and began writing for Off-Off-Broadway venues such as Theatre Genesis in New York in the 1960s. He spent more than eight years as resident playwright at San Francisco's Magic Theatre, where plays including Buried Child and True West were written and premiered. In 1979 Buried Child made him the first playwright to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama with an off-Broadway production, and he went on to receive 13 Obie Awards over his career. Alongside his stage work, he built a parallel career as a film actor, earning an Academy Award nomination for The Right Stuff. Shepard died in Kentucky in 2017 from complications of ALS.
