Biography
Salomon An-ski, born Shlomo Rappoport in 1863 in the Vitebsk province, grew up in an Orthodox Jewish household and turned early to socialist-revolutionary circles. After clashing with the Russian authorities, he lived in exile in Paris from 1892, where he became active in the Jewish socialist movement. Back in Russia, he founded the Jewish Historical and Ethnographic Society in 1908 and led ethnographic expeditions through Jewish communities in the Pale of Settlement between 1912 and 1914, material that became the basis for "The Dybbuk". He translated the play, originally written in Russian, into Yiddish himself, but did not live to see it staged: he died in Warsaw in 1920, shortly before its premiere.
