Biography
Sakaria Paliaschwili was born in Kutaisi in 1871 and died in Tbilisi in 1933. He studied at the Tbilisi Musical College from 1895 to 1899 and then, on a scholarship, with Sergei Taneyev at the Moscow Conservatory until 1903. After returning to Georgia he worked as an organist and conductor, helped found the Georgian Philharmonic Society in 1905, and later headed the Tbilisi Conservatory as a professor and, for a time, as its rector. In his operas 'Abesalom da Eteri' (1919), 'Daisi' (1923) and 'Latavra' (1928) he combined Georgian folk music, of which he collected around 300 songs himself, with European compositional technique. Motifs from his work have formed the basis of the Georgian national anthem since 2004, and the opera house in Tbilisi has borne his name since 1937.
