Biography

Ron Jones was born in San Francisco in 1941 and studied at Stanford University. As a history teacher at Cubberley High School in Palo Alto, he had his class, which was studying Nazi Germany, form an authoritarian movement called The Third Wave within a few days in 1967, in order to show how readily people submit to such a community. His later account of it became the basis for the 1981 American television film The Wave, the novel by Morton Rhue that grew out of it and the 2008 German feature film Die Welle, on which Jones served as a consultant. Two years after the experiment the school denied him tenure; he then spent some three decades working with people with disabilities and wrote books such as The Acorn People and Say Ray, which won the American Book Award in 1985. For the stage he wrote a musical about the experiment in 2010 and, together with Joseph Robinette, the play The Third Wave in 2011.
