Biography
Roland Schimmelpfennig was born in Göttingen on 19 September 1967 and, after leaving school, first worked as a journalist in Istanbul. From 1990 he trained as a director at the Otto Falckenberg School in Munich, then became an assistant director and later a member of the artistic management of the Münchner Kammerspiele; he also worked at the Schaubühne in Berlin, the Burgtheater in Vienna and the Deutsches Theater Berlin. His best-known plays include “Die arabische Nacht” (2001), “Push Up 1–3” (2001), “Die Frau von früher” (2004), “Der goldene Drache” (2009) and “Anthropolis” (2023); his work is performed in more than 40 countries. Among other honours he received the Nestroy Theatre Prize for best play in 2002 and 2009 and the Mülheim Dramatists’ Prize in 2010 for “Der goldene Drache”; in 2024 he was named playwright of the year. Since 2016 he has also published novels with S. Fischer, most recently “Sie wartet, aber sie weiß nicht, auf wen” (2025). In September 2026 his new play “Tag und Nacht” premieres at Schauspiel Köln.
