Biography
Richard Heuberger was born on 18 June 1850 in Graz and turned to music at the age of 27 after training as an engineer, studying at the Graz Conservatory under, among others, Robert Fuchs. In Vienna he led the Akademischer Gesangverein and the Wiener Singakademie, and from 1902 taught at the Conservatory of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, where Clemens Krauss was among his students. For decades he also worked as a music critic, writing for the Neues Wiener Tagblatt and, from 1896, succeeding Eduard Hanslick at the Neue Freie Presse. Of his many operettas, only Der Opernball (1898) has remained permanently in the repertoire. Heuberger died on 28 October 1914 in Vienna.
