Biography

Richard Brinsley Sheridan was born on 30 October 1751 in Dublin and moved to England with his family as a child. His comedies 'The Rivals' (1775) and 'The School for Scandal' (1777) made him one of the most successful playwrights of his day. In 1776 he acquired a share in London's Drury Lane Theatre, which he went on to co-manage, staging his satire on theatrical conventions, 'The Critic', there in 1779. From 1780 he sat in the British House of Commons as a Whig MP and became known as an orator, notably during the impeachment of Warren Hastings. Sheridan died in London on 7 July 1816.
