Riccardo Zandonai

1883 – 1944 · Italian

Biography

Riccardo Zandonai was born on 28 May 1883 in Borgo Sacco near Rovereto (then part of Austria-Hungary) and died on 5 June 1944 in Pesaro. From 1899 he studied at the Rossini Conservatory in Pesaro under Pietro Mascagni, completing the normally nine-year course in just three years by 1902. Of his eleven operas, Francesca da Rimini (1914), after Gabriele D'Annunzio, has remained in the international repertoire ever since; after Puccini's death, the publisher Ricordi even considered Zandonai to complete Puccini's unfinished Turandot before the commission went to Franco Alfano instead. In 1916 he married the singer Tarquinia Tarquini. From the mid-1930s until 1941 he directed the Rossini Conservatory in Pesaro, where he also revised several of Rossini's own operas.
