Biography
Riccardo Drigo was born in Padua in 1846 and studied composition there and at the conservatory in Venice. In 1879 he became conductor of the Italian Opera in St Petersburg, and in 1886 he additionally took charge of the Imperial Ballet as its composer and music director. In that role he conducted the premieres of Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty and Nutcracker as well as Glazunov's Raymonda, and composed numerous ballets himself for Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, including Le Réveil de Flore, Les Millions d'Arlequin and La Flûte magique. After the October Revolution he returned to Italy in 1920 and died in Padua in 1930.
