Biography
Riccardo Cocciante was born in 1946 in Saigon to an Italian father and a French mother and grew up in Rome from the age of eleven. He built a successful career in Italy as a singer-songwriter in the 1970s, with albums including Mu (1972) and Anima (1974), and won the Sanremo Music Festival in 1991. From the mid-1990s he turned to musical theatre, composing the score for Notre-Dame de Paris with lyricist Luc Plamondon, a work that made him internationally known as a musical composer after its 1998 premiere. Cocciante has also lived for periods in the United States and France, and has released songs in Italian, French, Spanish and English.
