Biography
Reşat Nuri Güntekin was born on 27 November 1889 in Istanbul, the son of a military doctor. After studying literature at Istanbul University, he worked from 1913 as a teacher of French and literature at several schools before being appointed a school inspector in 1931 and chief inspector of the Ministry of Education in 1947. From 1939 to 1946 he represented the province of Çanakkale in the Turkish parliament. His novel Çalıkuşu (1922), about a young teacher in Anatolia, became his best-known work and was adapted for film several times; orientalist Otto Spies praised his clear, engaging style. Güntekin died on 7 December 1956 in London, where he had gone for treatment of lung cancer.
