Biography
Reinhold Glière was born in Kyiv in 1875, the son of a musical-instrument maker who had emigrated from the Vogtland region of Saxony. He first studied violin at the Kyiv Music School and, from 1894, composition at the Moscow Conservatory. From 1913 he taught at the Kyiv Conservatory, becoming its director in 1914, before leading a composition class at the Moscow Conservatory from 1920 to 1941, where his students included Sergei Prokofiev and Nikolai Myaskovsky. His personal style combined late-Romantic Russian tradition with melodies and dances drawn from the peoples of the Soviet Union, as in his 1927 ballet 'The Red Poppy'. He received the Stalin Prize several times and was awarded the Order of Lenin. Glière died in Moscow in 1956.
