Biography
Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was born on 26 February 1954 in the Kasımpaşa district of Istanbul and attended a religious vocational high school (İmam Hatip school) before completing a degree in economics at Marmara University. In the 1970s he was active in Istanbul's Islamist youth movement and in 1975 wrote, directed and took the lead role in his play "Mas-Kom-Yah," which was performed nationwide until the 1980 military coup. This remained his only known work as a playwright. Erdoğan later became mayor of Istanbul (1994–1998), prime minister of Turkey (2003–2014), and has been president of Turkey since 2014.
