Biography
Rainer Werner Fassbinder was born in Bad Wörishofen on 31 May 1945 and grew up in Munich. In 1967 he joined Munich's Action-Theater, where his play Katzelmacher was staged in 1968; after the group broke up that same year he founded the antiteater with Peer Raben and others, writing and directing plays for it such as Preparadise sorry now and Anarchie in Bayern. This theatre work gave rise to his first feature films in 1969, followed in quick succession by works including Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, The Marriage of Maria Braun and the television series Berlin Alexanderplatz (1980). In the 1974/75 season he was co-director of the Theater am Turm in Frankfurt; the play he wrote there, Der Müll, die Stadt und der Tod (Garbage, the City and Death), sparked a long controversy over its antisemitic clichés. Of his 24 plays, Die bitteren Tränen der Petra von Kant (The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant) is the most frequently staged worldwide. Fassbinder died in Munich on 10 June 1982, a few months after winning the Golden Bear at the Berlinale for Veronika Voss.
