Biography
Rafeeq Mangalassery, from Chettippadi in Kerala's Malappuram district, works as a screenwriter and director for Malayalam theatre. In 2013 he received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Drama for his play „Jinnu Krishnan“, and later the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award for best script for „Iratta Jeevithangaliloode“. His 2018 school play „Kithaab“, about a Muslim girl who wants to call the Islamic prayer call, sparked a nationwide debate on artistic freedom after protests by Muslim organisations blocked it from the state school festival. Later plays have repeatedly drawn him into controversies over religion and politics in Kerala.
