Biography

Qara Qarayev was born in Baku in 1918 and studied first at the conservatory there before studying composition with Dmitri Shostakovich at the Moscow Conservatory. From the 1940s he headed the Baku Philharmonic and later served as professor and long-time rector of the Azerbaijan State Conservatory, training numerous composers. His work combines Azerbaijani folk and mugham traditions with Western orchestral and, at times, twelve-tone technique; besides the ballets 'Seven Beauties' (1952) and 'The Path of Thunder' (1958), he wrote operas, symphonies and film scores. The Soviet Union honoured him with the title People's Artist of the USSR as well as the Stalin and Lenin Prizes. Qarayev died in Moscow in 1982.
