Biography
Titus Maccius Plautus was born around 254 BC, probably in Sarsina in Umbria, and died around 184 BC. According to tradition, after failing as a merchant he worked for a time as a hired hand in a mill before turning entirely to the theatre. Of some 130 comedies attributed to him, the scholar Varro judged 21 to be genuine; they are the oldest completely preserved works of Roman literature. Plautus adapted mostly Greek originals from New Comedy for the Roman stage, going on to influence playwrights from Shakespeare to Molière.
