Biography
Pietro Generali, born on 23 October 1773 under the name Mercandetti, studied counterpoint with Giovanni Masi in Rome and spent a brief period at the Naples conservatory, having begun his career composing sacred music. His comic opera 'Pamela nubile' (Venice, 1804) brought his first major success, followed by numerous further farse such as 'Adelina' (1810); he went on to compose around 54 operas in total. As Gioachino Rossini's star rose in the early 1810s, Generali largely withdrew from the competition and moved to Barcelona, where he directed the opera company at the Teatre de la Santa Creu, before working as a conductor and teacher in Naples from 1820. He spent his final years, disappointed by the declining response to his work, as maestro di cappella at Novara Cathedral, where he died in 1832.
