Biography
Pierre Carlet de Chamblain de Marivaux was born on 4 February 1688 in Paris and died there on 12 February 1763. After losing his fortune in the collapse of John Law's Mississippi Company in 1720, he turned to writing professionally, first as a journalist with periodicals such as Le Spectateur françois, then chiefly as a playwright for the Comédie-Italienne and the Comédie-Française. His comedies, including The Game of Love and Chance, La Fausse Suivante and Les Fausses Confidences, are built on a subtle, double-edged dialogue about the birth of love that gave rise to the term 'marivaudage'. He also wrote the unfinished novels The Life of Marianne and The Fortunate Peasant. He was elected to the Académie française in 1742.
