Biography

Philippe Quesne was born in 1970 and studied fine art and graphic design at the École Estienne and stage design at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris. For about ten years he worked as a set designer for theatre and opera productions before founding the interdisciplinary company Vivarium Studio in Paris in 2003, bringing together actors, musicians and visual artists. Its pieces rely on images, music and little text; well-known works include L’Effet de Serge (2007), La Mélancolie des dragons (2008, Festival d’Avignon), Big Bang (2010), Swamp Club (2013), La Nuit des taupes (2016), Farm Fatale (2019) and Le Jardin des délices (2023). From 2014 to 2020 he ran the Théâtre Nanterre-Amandiers, and in 2022 he took over the Paris performance venue Ménagerie de verre. His work has been shown at the Hamburg International Summer Festival, Berlin’s Hebbel am Ufer and the Volksbühne, among others; in 2025 he staged Vampire’s Mountain, his first production at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg.
