Philippe Boesmans

Biography

Philippe Boesmans was born on 17 May 1936 in Tongeren and died on 10 April 2022 in Brussels. He studied piano at the Liège Conservatory and, as a self-taught composer, only turned to composition after contact with the Groupe de Liège around Henri Pousseur. From 1985 he served as composer-in-residence at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, where most of his eight operas premiered. His best-known stage works include "Reigen" (1993) after Arthur Schnitzler and "Wintermärchen" (1999) after Shakespeare, as well as, in close collaboration with author and director Joël Pommerat, "Au monde" (2014) and "Pinocchio" (2017). His final work, "On purge bébé!", was completed after his death by his former student Benoît Mernier and premiered posthumously in Brussels in December 2022.
