Philipp Löhle

Biography

Philipp Löhle was born in Ravensburg in 1978 and studied history, theatre and media studies and German literature at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg; his first play, “Kauf-Land”, was staged at the Theater Erlangen in 2005. His breakthrough came with “Genannt Gospodin”, premiered at the Schauspielhaus Bochum in 2007, which won him the commission award of the Stückemarkt at the Berlin Theatertreffen that same year; in 2008 he received the jury prize of the Heidelberger Stückemarkt for “Lilly Link oder Schwere Zeiten für die Rev…”. In the same year he took part in the International Playwrights Residency at London's Royal Court Theatre. His globalisation satire “Das Ding” won the audience award of the Mülheim theatre festival in 2012. Löhle was house playwright at the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin, the Nationaltheater Mannheim and the Staatstheater Mainz, and since the 2018/19 season he has been house playwright at the Staatstheater Nürnberg, where he also directs, most recently his sports comedy “Die Erfindung der Schuhe” (premiere scheduled for October 2026). In 2023 he was awarded the Saarbrücken Poetics Lectureship for Drama.
