Biography
Peter von Winter was baptised in Mannheim in 1754 and died in Munich in 1825. As a child he already played violin in the Mannheim court orchestra, where he studied under Abbé Vogler alongside later pupils Carl Maria von Weber and Giacomo Meyerbeer. When the court moved to Munich in 1778, his career moved with it; he became vice-Kapellmeister there in 1787 and Hofkapellmeister for vocal music in 1798. Winter composed more than thirty operas and, alongside Mozart and Weigl, became one of the few German opera composers of his generation to achieve fame across Europe, from Paris to Moscow. He was ennobled in 1814.
