Biography

Peter Shaffer was born on 15 May 1926 in Liverpool and, after wartime forced labour in British coal mines, studied history at Trinity College, Cambridge. He worked for some years as a librarian in New York and as a music and literature critic in London before turning entirely to writing for the stage. With plays such as Five Finger Exercise, Black Comedy and, above all, Equus (1973), he became one of the most successful British playwrights of his generation. In 1979 he wrote his greatest stage success, Amadeus, about the rivalry between Mozart and the court composer Antonio Salieri, which won several Tony Awards in 1981. Peter Shaffer died on 6 June 2016 in Ireland.
