Biography
Péter Nádas was born in Budapest in 1942 and first worked as a photographer and journalist, including at the newspaper Pest Megyei Hírlap from 1965 to 1969, before becoming a freelance writer in 1969. After his first publication in 1965 he was barred from publishing for several years; his novel The End of a Family Story appeared in 1977. He gained international renown with the vast A Book of Memories (1986), followed later by the three-volume Parallel Stories (2005) and the two-volume memoir Shimmering Details (2017). He also wrote plays such as Takarítás, Találkozás and Temetés; after a heart attack in 1993 he wrote the autobiographical text Own Death (German edition 2002). His honours include the Austrian State Prize for European Literature (1991), the Kossuth Prize (1992), the Franz Kafka Prize (2003) and the Würth Prize for European Literature (2014), and he was a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts from 2006. He died in Gombosszeg, Hungary in August 2026.
