Biography
Péter Eötvös was born in 1944 in Székelyudvarhely (Transylvania, now Romania) and died in 2024 in Budapest. Admitted to the Budapest Academy of Music by Zoltán Kodály, he studied composition there and conducting in Cologne from 1966. From 1968 to 1976 he worked with Karlheinz Stockhausen's ensemble, and from 1979 to 1991 he was principal conductor of the Ensemble intercontemporain under Pierre Boulez. In 1991 he founded the International Eötvös Institute in Budapest to support young conductors and composers. Eötvös composed 13 operas, including "Three Sisters," "Angels in America," and "Sleepless," alongside numerous orchestral and chamber works. His honours include the Kossuth Prize, the Frankfurt Music Prize, and the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale.
