Pavel Haas was born on 21 June 1899 in Brno and studied composition from 1920 to 1922 in Leoš Janáček's master class, becoming regarded as Janáček's most significant pupil. He wrote incidental music for the Brno theatre and in 1929 succeeded Janáček as chairman of the Moravian Composers' Association; his principal work, the opera Šarlatán, premiered in Brno in 1938.
