Paula Kläy was born in Zurich in 1997 and studied scenic writing at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) from 2020. She also writes as a duo with the author Guido Wertheimer; their joint play Die Unzulänglichkeit der Dinge premiered at the Landestheater Detmold in 2022. In 2022 she was nominated for the Prize for Young Drama of the theatres in Magdeburg and Braunschweig; in 2023 her play Oberland won the audience award at the Long Night of New Drama in Munich, and an excerpt from Gewölk was shown at the Autor:innentheatertage at the Deutsches Theater Berlin. In the 2024/25 season she was resident playwright at Theater Münster, where Gewölk premiered in January 2026. Further premieres included Grausame Gestalten (2024, Saarländisches Staatstheater), Gigantische Einsamkeit (2025, Münchner Kammerspiele), Kassandra. Das Ende der Ereignisse (2025, RambaZamba Theater Berlin), a new version of Felix Krull (2025, E.T.A. Hoffmann Theater Bamberg) and, in 2026, Alltägliche Spektakel at the Saarländisches Staatstheater. Her texts are peopled by idiosyncratic figures of the near future in atmospheric spaces, and they pair serious themes with humour.
