Biography
Paul Lincke was born in Berlin in 1866 and died in 1946 in Hahnenklee-Bockswiese. After four years of musical training in Wittenberg, where he learned bassoon and violin among other instruments, he worked from 1884 as a musician in Berlin theatres and spent two years as a conductor at the Folies Bergère in Paris. From 1908 he led the Metropol-Theater in Berlin as its conductor. His best-known work was the operetta 'Frau Luna', premiered in 1899, whose opening night is regarded as the birth of Berlin operetta; the same year brought another major success, 'Im Reiche des Indra'. Lincke has since been named, alongside Johann Strauss (Vienna) and Jacques Offenbach (Paris), as the founder of a distinct operetta genre, and in 1941 he was made an honorary citizen of Berlin.
